Coughlin wants to keep Countdown momentum going with Indy victory
Jeg Coughlin has already qualified to defend his NHRA POWERade world championship title in the Countdown to 1. However, he hopes his final points position in Pro Stock’s top 10 will change with a strong performance at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, the world’s most prestigious drag race.
Coughlin hopes an Indy victory will help him move into second place in the final regular-season points standings, knowing from experience that every point will be extremely valuable when the top 10 Pro Stock teams gear up for the six-race playoff run in the Countdown to 1 that begins Sept. 11-14 at zMax Dragway @ Concord near Charlotte.

| Smith cranking it up as Countdown regular season ends Matt Smith waited until the last pass of 2007 to win his first POWERade Series world championship. If the past month or so is any indication, the Pro Stock Motorcycle rider may not be so patient in 2008. With wins at three of the last four races, he has moved into first place and leads second-place Andrew Hines by 73 points entering the 54th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.

| Neff retains early edge as favorite in rookie-of-the-year battle Last year, Ashley Force easily earned the Auto Club Road to the Future Award for rookie of the year after proving her mettle on and off the track. This season, voters are focused again on the Funny Car category as Force’s teammate Mike Neff (pictured) and another Ford driver, Bob Tasca III, battle to make the best impression and during their first season as NHRA POWERade Series drivers. |
